Torrebarri Tower-House
Demolished and transformed into a residential home, it still preserves some stylistic and decorative features.
It is a building of noble bearing and great beauty whose most remarkable element is the beautiful shield carved in stone on the façade. It belongs to the Mujica-Butrón lineage, dated 1603, to which the previous building also belonged.
The Shield is etched with an inscription in Basque language which may well be the oldest epigraphic text preserved in this language:
“MUXICA ARERIOCAZ AGICA BUTROE CELANGOA DA OROC D // AQUIE GARAIA NAGO ERIA GORDE AGO”.
Meaning:
“Mujica bites into the enemies Butron as he is, everyone knows that I am the winner. People be on your guard.”
