St. James’ Arch
The Arch of Santiago is part of the historical-architectural ensemble of the historic quarter of Plentzia, which has an impact on its historical value.
It is the only visible reminder of the wall that surrounded the town, as there are no other remains left. The sole exception is a municipal document which states that the space occupied by the remains was used to build a house named Arrartena (the current Batzoki) in the 18th century, as well as another one at the entrance to Artekale Street.
Despite its simplicity and not being aesthetically outstanding- a plain arch between two buildings-, the arch has got great historical value, as it is the only remnant of the walls that surrounded the medieval Plentzia (settled around 1236), whereas the rest has given way to the pressure of time, getting reduced to ruins or disappearing between the walls of the houses.
